Self-Injury Awareness Day

Self-Injury Awareness Day

Self-injury Awareness Day (SIAD) is an annual global awareness campaign held on March 1st.
Self-injury also known as Non-suicidal self-injurious behaviour is the act of causing harm to one’s own body on purpose, through means such as cutting or burning. These behaviours are often hidden, and practiced on parts of the body that may not be visible. They are employed as a means of coping with severe distress and emotional pain, deep sadness or intense anger and stress.

It may not be meant as an attempt to die by suicide, however if active support from the environment or community is absent and there is no space for healthier ways of coping or processing the emotions from situations, it may lead to death by suicide.

This day brings a spotlight to self-injurious behaviour with organisations raise awareness on the topic, breaking stereotypes and bias on the issue of self-harm. This day creates space also for survivors to share about their journeys and experiences of self-harm.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing this distress, know that you are not alone. You matter. It’s okay to reach out for support.
