Codependency Awareness Month

It’s Codependency Awareness Month, and we are bringing a spotlight on this issue for this upcoming week!

Initially, this term was used in the context of relationships wherein one or both partners engaged in substance abuse. However, now, we understand that codependency refers to an unhealthy emotional relationship that may emerge in any sort of connection, including romantic relationships, relationships wherein one partner’s emotional or other needs become central to the relationship, with the other partner compelled to respond to these needs even at a cost to their own. These dysfunctional patterns can be seen in some relationships marked by abuse, caregiving relationships, and in those with co-occurring mental health conditions.

Co-dependency has been linked to trauma, relationship dysfunction and neglect, especially in childhood experiences. It is also called relationship addiction.
