Language we use to talk about Suicide matter

Does the Language we use to talk about Suicide matter?

Language has power, and words may convey deep meaning to a listener, beyond what we may have thought of, reflecting our attitudes, perspectives, and that of others as well as a shared history. Moreover, language has the capacity to reinforce stigma associated with certain social issues, even without meaning to consciously perpetuate the same. Thus, the language we use may also shape others’ attitudes and perspectives on certain issues. Therefore, we need to make a conscious effort to shift the language used while talking about suicide.

It is important to hold on to empathy and compassion when talking about this issue, especially to the bereaved, to a survivor, or even when talking about the person who has died by suicide. Remember, it is a step taken in response to deep hopelessness and despair.
